You've probably heard the news by now, but I wanted to tell you how excited I am that today the Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, and dismissed the Proposition 8 case, clearing the way for marriage equality in California.
I couldn't be happier that love has won this round, and that the Court has followed Maine's leadership in allowing its residents to marry whom they love.
Over the next few days, we'll all be talking about what an important step forward this is for establishing marriage equality around the country. But today I've been thinking about the federal employees and veterans I've heard from who haven't been able to provide benefits to their spouses because the federal government wouldn't recognize their same-sex marriages.
The fact that these men and women who serve the nation couldn't get everything they've earned because of whom they love was unfair, unjust, and simply cruel.
No more. There are many battles still to be had, but this day is one we will look back on and smile.
